Human Development Index (HDI)

The "human development index" is published by the United Nations. This index is not based on the economical situation only. It takes into account the life expectancy, the under-five mortality rate, the adult literacy rate, the percentage of children and teenagers attending school, and combine them with the GDP per capita.
If you wish to know more about this index, you will find everything on http://hdr.undp.org/en/reports/global/hdr2007-2008/
