The World Youth Choir 2018 session will take place July 4-25, 2018, in Inner Mongolia, China, supported by the Inner Mongolia Bureau of National Art Troupes. The rehearsal session will be in Hohhot, and the concert tour will follow through Inner Mongolia and Beijing. The tour will end with the WYC 2018 performing at the opening ceremony of China’s 14th International Chorus Festival in Beijing. Drawing on the expertise and backgrounds of the two conductors, Helene Stureborg (Sweden) and Jonathan Velasco (Philippines), the core repertoire will consist of Nordic and European choir music from the 20th century and Asian folk and popular music.

Applications were received from singers representing 45 nationalities: Argentina, Austria, Belgium, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Brazil, Bulgaria, Canada, China, Columbia, Croatia, England, Estonia, France, Gabon, Germany, Ghana, Guatemala, Hong Kong, Hungary, Iceland, Indonesia, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Latvia, Malaysia, Malta, Mexico, Namibia, Netherlands, Norway, Peru, Portugal, Russia, Serbia, Slovenia, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, Thailand, United States of America, Uruguay, and Venezuela. There was a great gender balance (51% female/49% male), but the applications by voice were not as well balanced (Soprano 40%, Alto 12%, Tenor 24%, Bass 24%). Approximately 20% of the applicants have participated in previous WYC sessions.

The international jury for WYC 2018 took place in Tianjin, China (March 2018), when the representatives of the three patron organizations (IFCM, ECA-EC and JMI), together with the conductors of the session, selected the best singers from nearly 200 candidates. After many hours of listening to the numerous recordings and evaluating the applicants, the international jury selected 64 singers from 33 countries to be part of the WYC 2018 summer session.

Congratulations to all the WYC 2018 singers and their teachers, mentors, and sponsoring organizations. More details about the WYC 2018 tour will be posted on the World Youth Choir website (hotlink to https://www.worldyouthchoir.org/) as they become available.
