Kati Yetu! African Youth Choir Annual Summer Camp, Island of Gorée, Dakar, Senegal, 22-28 July 2024
Published: Jul 18,2024

Kati Yetu means 'between us' in Swahili. During Seven days, 22-28 July 2024, 23 singers from seven countries (Benin, Cameroon, DR Congo, Gabon, Gambia, Ivory Coast, Senegal) met and sang under the direction of Jean Benoit Bakhoum (Senegal), the new African Youth Choir conductor (2024-2025) who is succeeding Ken Wakia (Kenya) and Pierre Kouame (Ivory Coast), 2019-2023 conductors.

The repertoire included ten new, unpublished pieces. The singers were asked to completely master the repertoire prior to their arrival at the camp. During the camp, the singers devoted their time to perfecting their interpretation and choreography.

Workshops: Every day at the camp was lively and busy, with a variety of activities both on and off site. The following workshops alternated with free time or excursions:

  • Warm up with muscular exercices early in the morning
  • Singing workshops
  • Group or individual rehearsal workshops
  • Choreography workshops
  • Get to know each other and get to know each one's own culture.
