Two weeks ago, on July 11, we were going to welcome the choral world to Auckland. That afternoon you would have picked up your bag and lanyard at registration, learnt how to use the conference app, and oriented yourself in the main Symposium hub. You might also have strolled around the city and the harbour – and yes, it was a mild, sunny day! Later that day, you would have been treated to a spectacular, theatrical opening concert that was to showcase Aotearoa New Zealand in song.

The World Youth Choir Foundation is thrilled to announce that the World Youth Choir (WYC) will be one of the performing choirs at the next American Choral Directors Association (ACDA) National Conference, which will take place in Dallas, Texas (USA). The conference will convene 17-20 March 2021, and a World Youth Choir session will be held on the days surrounding the conference dates, to include a short rehearsal period and some additional performances.

The new coronavirus (COVID-19) is continuing to spread all over the world and we are witness to this worldwide pandemic which has caused the cancellation or postponement of international choral events. We checked the COVID-19 situation in the countries represented in the APYC, and several countries are beginning to see a second wave although the situation in Malaysia is improving. The Working Committee of the Asia Pacific Choral Council decided yesterday to postpone the APYC2020 session in Kuala Lumpur to November 2021.

IFCM and QNCA was to have taken place at this year's 12th WSCM in Auckland, New Zealand. Sadly, as with so many other events this year, WSCM2020 had to be cancelled. In a historical first for the Middle East region, the International Federation for Choral Music (IFMC) welcomes the choral world to Qatar! At the moment, when humanity is facing one of the biggest pandemics in more than 50 years, cultural events around the globe are on hold. Nonetheless, IFCM and its partner, the Qatar National Choral Association (QNCA), are working hard on the next World Symposium on Choral Music – the 13th WSCM! The world's largest, non-competitive, international choral event will be held in Doha, Qatar, in 2023

The world is going through very difficult and strange times. Among numerous other challenging consequences of this pandemic, choral enthusiasts around the globe are not allowed to maintain normal choral activities, rehearsals, and performances. We believe that it is more important than ever to stay strong and stick together, even if the challenges of moving forward are more difficult than before. Thanks to modern online technologies, we are not completely lost. Our community is discovering that there are many ways to keep ourselves connected to each other and our audiences.

Despite all types of choral events being cancelled due to the current pandemic crisis and even though we don’t know how long the crisis will last, we believe that it is important to remain positive and hopeful. That is why we are cautiously, and optimistically, announcing the planned date for World Choral Day 2020. Following last year’s decision by the IFCM Executive Committee, World Choral Day 2020 will take place on the second Sunday of December (13 December 2020).

The World Youth Choir Foundation (WYCF) continues to add documentaries about former World Youth Choir sessions to its YouTube channel. Since the 2020 World Youth Choir session with the German National Youth Orchestra has been cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic, the WYCF is featuring a documentary to mark the 10th anniversary of the 2010 World Youth Choir in Spain.

Three years day per day after the WSCM12 opening in Barcelona on July 22, 2017, The Federació Catalana d'Entitats Corals released seven videos (one for each day of the symposium), that offer a summary of the 2017 program: a song from each of the selected choirs, some pieces of the concert circle, a summary of the Sagrada Família concert, of the opening and closing concerts and of the concerts outside Barcelona.
