The Planning Committee for the 2023 World Symposium on Choral Music (WSCM) is delighted to announce the patronage by the State of Qatar’s Ministry of Culture and Sports for the 2023 WSCM. The WSCM is to be held in Doha, Qatar, 30 December 2023 to 5 January 2024.

The International Choral Bulletin was created exactly 40 years ago. Over these years, it became a longer publication, changed to colour print, went online and is now a multilingual information tool about choir music around the world. Introducing a new study which explores participation in choirs and singing groups A new study exploring participation in collective singing groups is being coordinated by Kerry Boyle and Lynn Revell at Canterbury Christ Church University (UK). Choirs and singing groups around the world are invited to share an online survey with their members in order that the experience of participants in a wide range of cultures and contexts can be studied.

The first meeting of the World Symposium on Choral Music (WSCM) 2023 Organizing Committee was held on January 3, 2021. Composed of six International Federation for Choral Music (IFCM) representatives, six representatives from the Qatar National Choral Association (QNCA), and two honorary members, the team is set to work on the monumental and exciting task of bringing the WSCM to the Middle East region for the first time. To that end, the QNCA representatives are from Qatar and the Arab region. Qatar, with its ancient traditions of hospitality and contemporary global outlook, offers a unique and welcoming setting for voices from around the world to mix, mingle, and share their unique choral traditions and knowledge.

The Africa Cantat International Committee met on 13 February 2021 to evaluate the current situation of the coronavirus pandemic and its impact on the organization of the Africa Cantat festival, planned for the summer of 2021 after the 2020 edition had to be replaced by an online event.

The Mothers Chorus Festival has been one of the most popular competitions held annually by Japan Choral Association (JCA). As the event was cancelled for 2020, JCA planned the first-ever virtual Mothers Chorus Project to keep the singing spirit alive. The result was a choir of 1,518 singers from all over Japan and the world! The video was released on 24 December 2020 and now it is available with English subtitles! Don’t miss the opportunity to hear JCA President and Vice-President speak about the project and share comments from singers.

Conductors without Borders (CWB) is one of the most significant projects of IFCM. For the past 13 years, CWB has organized many professional development events in parts of the world where choral music education is still not available to everyone. There have been successful sessions in Africa and Latin & Central America. Following a review of the CWB project in early 2020, the IFCM board approved a new, improved structure which will expand CWB even more. The new structure provides a mechanism through which anyone can apply to organize a CWB project in their country and can even become one of the conductors.
